about
our story
It all began with a deep love for heritage and a desire to share the spirit of Greece with our community. What started decades ago as a modest parish gathering has grown into one of Denver’s most beloved cultural celebrations. From the aroma of home-cooked dishes to the rhythm of traditional dances, every moment is a tribute to faith, family, and philoxenia—Greek hospitality at its finest. Our story is one of tradition, togetherness, and timeless celebration.
1964 - 1970s
Humble Beginnings

What began in 1964 as a small Greek Bazaar fundraiser for the Assumption of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Cathedral, quickly found traction within the Denver community . Originally aimed at supporting church activities, the event featured homemade pastries, coffee, traditional crafts, and modest cultural performances. Through these early years, the Cathedral’s parishioners laid the groundwork for what would become both a beloved church tradition and a public celebration.

1980s - 1990s
Growth & Community Engagement

As word spread, attendance climbed steadily. Parishioners from Denver and nearby communities embraced the Bazaar’s evolving character, adding live Greek dance, traditional music, and expanded menus. These decades saw significant community involvement—not only from the Hellenic Dance Academy and Cathedral Choir, but also local artisans contributing handmade goods. The Bazaar wasn’t just a fundraiser—it became a community gathering where Greek life and Denver’s cultural mosaic interwove.

Flagship Festival: Entering the Mainstream

By the early 2000s, the Bazaar outgrew its roots, transforming into the “Denver Greek Festival” — one of Colorado’s longest-running and most vibrant cultural events . What started with a few hundred attendees became a major annual summer draw, attracting thousands—including non-Greek Denverites—each June. The Cathedral was now hosting an outdoor weekend event, and for the festival's 50th anniversary in 2015, it marked a significant milestone: 5 decades of cultural celebration and community unity.

With over 25,000 visitors annually the festival now serves a dual purpose: a joyful celebration and a major fundraiser—supporting charitable causes and the Cathedral mission.
